The Silent Offering

When the tree feeds. The town prospers.

In Haven Ridge. Silence Is Sacrifice

The baby hadn’t even cried yet when they slit his throat. Naomi didn’t see the blade move. One second, her baby was wrapped in lambskin and oil, looking up at the ceiling. Next, there was a line of red across his neck, too fine to be real.

Then the blood came.

Slow at first, then steady, flowing over the woman’s hands as she held him, tilted like a chalice.

Naomi screamed.

She’d screamed when they took him from her. She’d screamed when they smeared ash on his forehead, when they opened the door and let the chanting in. But this—this sound came from a deeper place. A place below her ribs and lungs, where grief hadn’t even had time to settle yet.

The woman holding her baby looked down as the blood spilled into the stone bowl they’d brought with them. Her hands didn’t shake. Her expression didn’t change.

“This is mercy,” she said, almost gently. “We’ve planned everything so carefully, Naomi. The Almighty showed us the way.”

Naomi lunged. Her knees buckled, slick with blood, afterbirth, and dirt. They’d made her give birth on straw and rotting linens—said this was the beginning of their tradition. Said the offering needed to be natural.

None of this felt natural. She felt as if something had been ripped out of her twice: her baby, and her faith.

“You said you’d aid me,” she choked. “That you’d bring him into this world with prayer, with a blessing from the Hollow. Not—not this.”

The preacher stepped forward, the bone knife still in his hand, its edge soaked in blood and its handle—wrapped in human flesh—dripping into the earth.

“We never said what the blessing would look like,” he replied.

Naomi lunged for her baby again, a primal sound tearing from her throat she didn’t recognize, but the older woman forced her down, blocking her path.

“Don’t,” she said. “Don’t touch him now. The blood’s clean. We can’t mix it.”

“He’s my son.”

“Not anymore."
